Thomas Harold Fleming Watercolors &
Acrylics
As a very young man in Athens, Georgia, Harold Fleming painted
signs in storefront windows or anywhere his new found expertise was needed.
His evident creative talents followed him into the Navy during World War
II where he became a reconnaissance photographer and also assisted with
machine gun position. He photographed most of the central Pacific islands in
route to Japan aboard a plane that also bore his artistic touch...a large
comical masterpiece on the plane's side. It depicted the foreign enemy in great
distress, being stood upon, and urinated on by a large, grinning yellow dog.
The plane was aptly named, "Hound Dog."
Post war, Harold's photographic
and artistic talents led him into what would later begin his career in the
printing business.
In 1949, while working for Photo-Process Engraving
Company in Atlanta as a camera operator, he designed and constructed a large
format darkroom process camera, for use by, then, photo engravers. The camera
bore the name of it's creator- The Fleming Process Camera and it was used daily
in the Atlanta plant.
In 1962, Harold began his own printing company in
Atlanta, Fleming Color Service, Inc., specializing in four color process
printing and serving a large variety of clientele, both local and non-local. He
retired from the company in the late 1980's.
In the mid 1990's, Fleming
created his first limited edition print, "Touchdown To Peace", commemorating the
Japanese surrender and the end of World War II fifty years prior. Today,
several of these signed prints hang in historical public galleries. (Note:
"Touchdown To Peace" print available for purchase elsewhere on this
site.)
Today, as always, Harold's interest in creatively expressing
himself in watercolors and acrylics is a satisfying
hobby with much of his subject matter being people,
places or things he has been acquainted with, or
exposed to, during his lifetime. He occasionally attends artist workshops and
seminars, one recently requiring a trip to Mexico. He now resides in New Smyrna
Beach, Florida.
